Accessing treatment for muscle, bone and joint pain through Bupa UK

Direct employees of JIB member companies can access a benefits package which includes private medical insurance cover through Bupa.

This includes GP and specialist care, health and wellbeing resources and a 24/7 Employee Assistance programme, which offers support and guidance.

Bupa’s medical specialists can talk through your symptoms, provide expert advice and make sure you get the right treatment quickly.

Accessing treatment for muscle, bone and joint pain

In 2025, 50% of medical insurance claims from employees of JIB Member Companies helped with musculoskeletal conditions (muscle, bone and joint pain).

Stuart McNaughton is an Estimating and Design Engineer at JIB Member company Darke and Taylor. A few years ago, he fell and twisted his knee while coaching football. After a few weeks with no improvement, he accessed help via his local hospital and was initially diagnosed with a buckled knee. Through his JIB Member Benefits, he was also able to contact Bupa to access physiotherapy. His Bupa specialist also recommended an MRI which revealed an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

Stuart explained the process:
“This was before Bupa had an App so it was all done over the phone. With physiotherapy you get so many sessions under one authorisation, then if more are required your physiotherapist will write a letter for you to pass onto Bupa to extend more sessions under another authorisation.”

The physiotherapy helped Stuart recover from his injury but he did not regain the full range of mobility in the knee. Six years later he decided to explore whether this could be improved.

Stuart made an appointment and went to see his GP. Once he told her that he had Bupa Healthcare she wrote a letter on his behalf which arrived via email within a few days.

“With this letter, and now armed with the My Bupa App, I proceeded to start my journey again, this time digitally. This involved logging into the App and starting a treatment request, the process guides you through step-by-step – including submitting my digital GP referral letter.”

Bupa reviewed the letter and got back to him with a choice of specialist. Within a few weeks Stuart had seen a consultant face to face, had an MRI scan and was given the option of surgery – which he chose to take up.

Post surgery he was able to access a course of physiotherapy at a time that suited him, as well as having follow up appointments with his consultant.

“The whole process is so smooth and quick, as once you are in the system it guides itself really. Without Bupa I may still have been waiting for surgery”.
