On 10 June 2025, the Government announced a £14.2bn investment to build the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk. It states that this commitment to funding, over the next four years, will create 10,000 jobs.
Sizewell C was first identified as a potential nuclear site in 2009 by the Energy Secretary at that time, Ed Miliband. After several years delay, the project was granted a nuclear site licenced by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in May 2024. Today’s announcement is a significant step towards the site’s construction, which is estimated to take 10 years. Once operational, the plant aims to power the equivalent of 6 million homes.
Jay Parmer, Chief Executive of JIB said: “The Government’s financial commitment to Sizewell C marks a significant milestone for the electrotechnical sector. This investment not only strengthens the UK’s energy infrastructure but also underpins the urgent need to invest in skills and competence. A highly competent workforce of electricians will be the backbone of Sizewell C’s success and a driving force behind the nation’s economic resilience. At the JIB, our members play a unique role in helping to attract, upskill, and retain top-tier electrical operatives, ensuring that JIB members continue to lead the way in achieving the UK’s clean growth mission.”
Alongside this agreement to invest in Sizewell C, the government has announced that 2.5bn will be invested into the first small nuclear reactor programmes, creating 3,000 new skilled jobs in the East Midlands.
