Our JIB Team

Here's a bit more about the team members you're likely to come into contact with.

Steve Brawley – Chief Executive

Steve succeeded Ron Allender as Chief Executive in January 2009. He previously worked for the Electrical Contractors’ Association as an Employee Relations Adviser and has some 40 years of experience in industrial relations roles in the electrical contracting, engineering construction, power generation and ports industries.

Steve is married with two children, likes to keep fit at his gym and is a member of Audax UK, the long distance cycling club.

Sheik Khan – Secretary and Head of Industrial Relations

Sheik has worked at the JIB since 1987 and was appointed as Secretary and Head of Industrial Relations from 1st January 2013.

Sheik sits on a number of Boards, Committees and working parties and has an extensive knowledge of employment law, the JIB disputes procedure and the Employment Tribunal. He has been an Employment Tribunal lay member since 1995, sitting on hundreds of cases. He is also an experienced mediator, having successfully been involved in the settlements of over 600 cases.

Outside of work, Sheik has a wife and two young children to keep him in and out of mischief for which those mediation skills come in very handy! His other main interests are live music and comedy shows both of which he attends regularly. Sadly his sporting days are over but this has been replaced by becoming his daughters’ taxi service to their various clubs.

He is a School Governor at the Primary School which his children attend and which he also attended many years ago.

Andy Reakes – Employment and Skills Manager

Originally an Ancient History and Archaeology graduate, Andy converted into law and has since completed a law degree, LLM and an MA in Employee Relations. Andy has also recently started a PHD in Management Research focusing on collective bargaining in the construction industry.

Andy's role encompasses both the traditional IR functions and those projects which involve the development of the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS). Andy oversees the Regional Board structure and will act as Secretary when attending an RJIB. Andy also sits as Secretary to Cabling and Jointing Committee, JIB Skills Development Fund Committee and the ECS Steering Committee. One of Andy's main roles is in adminstering the JIB Dispute Procedure, often mediating on cases within the process and will act as Secretary on Dispute Committees when required. Andy is also responsible for organising the successful Apprentice Exchange programme, which has previously involved the New York JIB and Electro Group in Queensland, Australia.

Outside of work, Andy plays for a local football team and has a keen interest in a variety of sports. His ongoing academic studies ensure he is rarely idle.

Rob Gibbs – National Officer

Rob joined the JIB in 1999 before becoming a National Officer in 2009.

Rob’s role includes advising on the JIB Collective Agreement, providing support to the Regional Boards, representing the JIB at Exhibitions and Trade Shows and providing support to the ECS Strategic Development Manager.  Rob also compiles the annual JIB Accident Survey.

In his spare time, Rob enjoys reading, watching movies and walking in the Kent countryside and seaside.

Karen Sulsh – Office Manager/Membership Secretary

Karen commenced employment with the JIB in 2010 as Industrial Relations Assitant and was promoted to Office Manager in 2013.

Karen is highly regarded by her colleagues in the department and within the JIB. Many of you will have spoken to her as she is the first point of call; if she cannot assist she will refer you to the correct department. Karen is well known for her exceptional organisational and administrative skills.

Outside work, she has six children and ten grandchildren to keep her on her toes. When she does find time for herself, it is spent with her horses and dogs. Horses have been her hobby since the age of 10 and she competed for many years.
