How successful is mediation/conciliation?

The JIB has an enviable record of success with its mediation and conciliation procedures.

Since 1990 its record of resolving disputes placed into its procedures has been consistently between 80 and 90%. In 2009 the recession predictably saw an increase of referrals into the JIB dispute procedure. Indeed there were 124 referrals into the procedure and 83 were successfully mediated by the JIB. Only 5 needed to be resolved by a Dispute Committee. One case was appealed to the National Appeals Committee but was subsequently withdrawn. These figures are an excellent measure of the JIB’s success.

These figures do not include the many cases which are resolved either directly by the Parties or concluded by way of settlement agreements through the JIB’s offices without the need to place them into the JIB procedures.
